Shawn Mendes has dropped an emotional ballad two weeks after his split from Camila Cabello. The singer released "It'll Be Okay," a song that details the end of a turbulent romance, on Wednesday.
"The future we dreamed of is fading to black," he says in the song. Accompanied by piano, the track is about how the singer maintains a hopeful attitude of healing and acceptance after a breakup, repeating "It'll be okay" after every line.
"If you tell me you're leaving, I'll make it easy. It'll be okay if we can't stop the bleeding. We don't have to fix it, we don't have to stay, I will love you either way," he continues.
Mendes has been dropping hints about his new release since early this week. He released a part of the song Tuesday that says, "Are we gonna make it? Is this gonna hurt?" The next day, he shared a photo of a sun illuminating a beach with an orange glow.
"It feels like I haven't truly connected with you guys in a while," he captioned his post. "I miss you I hope you love this song."
The new track comes two weeks after Mendes and Cabello announced their split in a joint statement on social media. Both artists took to Instagram on Nov. 17 to inform their fans about their decision to part ways.
"Hey guys, we've decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever," they said. "We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward."
Mendes and Cabello had been friends for many years before their relationship turned romantic. They officially started dating in July 2019.
The pair spent the lockdown period together in Miami last year. However, a source told People that things took a different turn when they started working again.
"Things are different now. It's more back to normal life. They have careers that are taking them in different directions. They went from spending every day together to now not really spending any time together," said the source.
