Shay Mitchell Opens Up About Struggling As A New Mom: 'No One's Perfect'
When it comes to parenting, Shay Mitchell is keeping in mind that she’s only human.
The “You” Season 1 star happily welcomed her now 4-month-old daughter, Atlas, with Matte Babel in October 2019. Although motherhood hasn’t necessarily been easy, Mitchell, 32, is being patient with herself, Us Weekly reports.
“... I’m just constantly reminding myself every day, no one’s perfect. You don’t have to be perfect. You’re perfect to them, you know?” the “Pretty Little Liars” alum said.
Furthermore, the actress shared how thankful she is for her loved ones for helping her through the challenges she faces as a new mom.
“It’s all the unknown is what I call it,” Mitchell explained. “So having a good group of friends and people around you who have either been through it, or can just be an ear to listen to all of your thoughts, and stories of what’s been going on [is key]. But you know, I have a really, really good support team and so I’ve been really fortunate with that.”
The Canadian native added that having people to turn to is especially important when dealing with the emotional effects of parenting.
“I feel like definitely having the support system around you,” Mitchell said. “Because I think especially having a newborn, you’re going up and down with your emotions and dealing with all new things that I’ve never had to deal with before.”
Also having friends, who are experiencing similar challenges, proved to be pretty useful.
“My best friend had a baby a year before me, so it was really fresh in her mind, everything that I was going through,” the actress said. “But then even new friends that I’ve met on social media who was pregnant at the same time, now we’ve become friends.”
While Mitchell is now receiving support from her new online friends, she initially didn't get positive feedback from web users after welcoming Atlas. Shortly after giving birth to her daughter, she was slammed online for attending a party.
"I haven't been really checking my comments that often, but apparently people are really upset that I left three days after having a kid to go out and party," Mitchell posted on her Instagram story at the time. "It wasn't three days and I left her with [my dog] Angel."
However, Mitchell still has a positive outlook on networking. She told US Weekly that when it comes to “being a new mom, it’s all about supporting each other.”
