Shia LaBeouf Explains Carey Mulligan Breakup: “It’s Not A Game For Me”
Between his uncouth comments about the Hollywood studio system and his claim that he sent director Lars Von Trier his own sex tape to land a role in "Nymphomaniac," Shia LaBeouf can't seem to stay out of the gossip headlines.
Now the 26-year-old is revealing the reason behind his breakup with British actress Carey Mulligan.
In a recent interview with the Sunday Times, the "Lawless" star claimed that the Oscar nominated actress wanted to settle down - which he isn't ready to do just yet.
"Sensibilities, cultures, histories. There were differences, that's all," said LaBeouf. "She's happy as hell right now, and we wouldn't have been able to make it like that. She was chasing marriage, family, kids more than I was.
"I'm not opposed to marriage. I just think I'm quite young," he said. "I come from divorce. I'm only doing marriage once. It's not a game for me. I'm not a religious person, but I have ethics."
The pair met while filming "Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps" in 2009. In August of that year, there were signs of trouble: New York Magazine reported that LaBeouf lost his temper at the premiere of her breakout film "An Education."
According to the outlet: "At last night's premiere of 'An Education,' burgeoning star Carey Mulligan was shining in all her chic, cute glory - until her liquor-swilling boyfriend, Shia LaBeouf, picked a lovers' spat!"
The couple called it quits in October 2010. The following year, LaBeouf told Details that despite the breakup, he still loved Mulligan.
"I still love her. I think she's a [expletive] awesome person and an incredible actress," he told the mag. "We're still pals. I wouldn't take any of it back, and I don't think she would either. It just ran its course."
In March of 2011 Mulligan began dating Mumford and Sons lead singer Marcus Mumford. The two married just over a year later on April 21, 2012.
LaBeouf, who rose to fame after starring in the action hit "Transformers," has been dating fashion designer Karolyn Pho since August 2011. Last month, the couple was snapped in the midst of an emotional spat in Los Angeles.
LaBeouf is currently filming the provocative "Nymphomaniac" in Cologne, Germany.
In a recent interview with MTV, Shia LaBeouf hinted that many of the film's sex scenes may be authentic.
"There's a disclaimer at the top of the script that basically says we're doing it for real," LaBeouf said. "Everything that is illegal, we'll shoot in blurred images. Other than that, everything is happening."
