The first season finale of “Single Parents” airs Wednesday night, but fans don’t know what’s next for the ABC sitcom. The network has not announced whether the show is canceled or renewed for Season 2. However, ratings might give audiences a clue.

“Single Parents” Season 1 was never a runaway hit. It has been averaging 3.396 million viewers each week and pulling in about 0.88 in the all-important 18-49 demographic. While it’s not a ratings juggernaut, it also isn’t a dud, either. Shows like “Speechless” and “Splitting Up Together” are much more in danger of cancellation than “Single Parents.”

Still, its those ratings don’t guarantee a renewal, especially considering its timeslot. It airs on Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. EDT, right after “Modern Family.” The veteran show is averaging 4.855 million pairs of eyeballs in Season 10, with 1.27 in the demo, according to TV Series Finale. “Single Parents” loses well over a million viewers from the lead-in. All of the Wednesday night comedies, including “The Goldbergs” and freshman sitcom “Schooled,” are doing better than “Single Parents.”

There are things working in favor of a “Single Parents” renewal, though. It’s produced by ABC Studios, which makes it more profitable. Though it had some mixed reviews when it debuted in September, the 30-minute show has support from fans. Rotten Tomatoes shows that while it’s been deemed 73% fresh by critics, 80% of audiences like it.

There are also factors that aren’t public. Numbers from online streaming platforms like Hulu and ABC’s website as well as deals to air the show internationally could affect ABC’s decision to cancel or renew as well.

Expect to hear a final decision on or before Tuesday, May 14, the day the Walt Disney Company holds Upfronts for ABC and several other networks.

Until then, fans can enjoy Wednesday’s “Single Parents” Season 1 finale. The episode brings star Leighton Meester’s real-life husband Adam Brody on to play Graham’s father. The episode will focus on Meester’s Angie dealing with Graham going to camp for the first time.

“Single Parents” airs Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. EDT on ABC.
