‘Siren’ Questions Answered: Can Ryn Get Drunk? Does Maddie Have Friends? And More
Freeform’s a few episodes into airing Season 2 of its mermaid drama, “Siren,” and a lot of questions from the first season have been answered, but there are still so many things to wonder about.
International Business Times caught up with executive producers Eric Wald and Emily Whitesell and stars Fola Evans-Akingbola (Maddie) and Alex Roe (Ben) at New York Comic Con last year to get their thoughts on some of the show’s biggest mysteries. For instance, can Ryn (Eline Powell) even get drunk? Is Ben the only person Maddie has to hang out with?
Keep reading to get some answers to those “Siren” questions and more.
Does Maddie have any of her own friends?
Evans-Akingbola: I’m always saying and thinking that. She does, but, she is — this is consuming her life at the moment. And, so, I think she definitely — like, when she left school, she kind of found sanctuary working in the marine mammal center and in Ben. And, whether that’s very healthy or not, that is her life…At the moment, Maddie’s life is quite consumed with what’s going on with the throuple.
Whitesell: Maddie and Xander (Ian Verdun) actually have a long history in town together, and that’s gonna also show itself. There’s some stuff really early on that we elude to.
Aside from friendship, will “Siren” Season 2 explore Maddie and Xander's past romantic relationship a bit more?
Evans-Akingbola: Not too much…More stuff might come up, but, [as of episode 6], Maddie’s heart is really with Ben, and I think that her dynamic with Xander was kind of like a sweet teenage love fun, but it wasn’t anything deep. And I think they’re just very good friends. But the writers might have other ideas.
Will Ben learn about Xander and Maddie's past? What would he think of it?
Wald: Yeah, he’s obviously caught in there and it will come out. In subtle ways. Not quite there yet.
Roe: No spoilers on that, but I think Ben, he sees the world in an altruistic way, and I think that if Maddie and Xander had something in their past, I don’t think, personally, that he would deal with it in a jealous way. I think that he’d be kind of quite accepting of it.
Will there be some lighter moments this season? Can Ryn even get drunk?
Evans-Akingbola: Well, in [Season 2], we’ll get to explore Ryn. She lets her hair down a bit in a certain way.
Whitesell: So, Ryn does seem to be able to drink and not really be affected by it, which is part of their physiology we’re saying, and, yet, there’s a lot of fun to be had in Season 2. There’s a lot of social situations she gets into, and there’s a lot of lighter moments with Ryn, with Maddie, with Ben and others that come.
Chris (Chad Rook) left town at the end of Season 1. Is he coming back at all?
Wald: He gets pulled back into it in a later episode. There’s some story that comes back with what happened out there on the North Star and Sean (Brian Anthony Wilson) dying. And he comes back as part of that storyline. He’ll pop back for an episode.
Watch “Siren” Season 2 on Freeform on Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST to get more answers to these questions and beyond.
