‘Sleepy Hollow’ Season 2 Spoilers: ‘West Wing’ Actor Timothy Busfield Recast As Benjamin Franklin; Theory On Why The Original Founding Father Was Replaced
Yes! Finally some “Sleepy Hollow” news for us to lose our minds -- or shall we say heads? -- over. According to Entertainment Weekly, the hit Fox drama has found someone to take on the role of Benjamin Franklin for Season 2. But who? We’ll give you some hints: He has starred in the critically acclaimed TV show “The West Wing” and he has a mighty fine strawberry beard. Yup, we’re talking about Timothy Busfield.
It was reported back in April that the one of the Founding Fathers would be returning to the haunted town of Sleepy Hollow. But it wasn’t revealed who would be replacing Memphis journalist Jon Sparks in the role.
Incidentally, Spark was quite shocked when he first learned that he scored the role. "She said they want you for Ben Franklin," he said to Fox regarding a conversation he had with his agent. "I said, 'I'm sorry? What?' I didn't believe it. She sent me the e-mail. I had to read it over and over. It said, 'Yes, we are hiring Jon to play Ben Franklin.'"
But now it's Busfield turn, and probably because the role has become a larger part of the storyline and the creators of the supernatural thriller want a more experienced actor.
“Last season, we created this history between Ichabod and George Washington that talked about this secret war that was part of the American Revolution,” explained executive producer Mark Goffman to Entertainment Weekly. “This season, we’re continuing that and expanding on it with other characters. Benjamin Franklin is great because we are all familiar with so many of his contributions and now we get to pull back the veil a bit. This man founded the printing press and was responsible for so many [innovations] and now we find out he’s involved in this secret war and that Crane had a relationship with him. I’ve read several biographies of Franklin and we’re teeing off on some of his precociousness and eccentricities.”
Is it safe to say “Sleepy Hollow” is looking for a more qualified actor to take on the evolving role? We think so. What are your thoughts about Busfield joining the cast for Season 2? Chime away in the comments section below.
