Rumors are swirling that Sofia Vergara is engaged to her on-again-off-again boyfriend, Nick Loeb. But sources and a spokeswoman for the star tell a different story.

Ever since a People story claimed that a source told the magazine that the couple got engaged on a Mexico vacation, there have been a number of reports claiming that the rumor is in fact iron-clad truth.

But it appears that that is not the case, as a closer reading of the People story reveals.

Sofia Vergara, the beautiful star of Modern Family, turned 40 years old on Tuesday, and People reports that former flame Nick Loeb gave her a big ring to celebrate the occasion. A flurry of rumors that it was not just a birthday present but a symbol of their alleged engagement began after her friend Fernando Fiore tweeted a photo of her wearing a massive rock.

That's where the truth stops (though who exactly gave Vergara the ring haven't really been confirmed just yet) and the rumor begins. According to the People article, only one source says that Sofia Vergara and Nick Loeb are engaged, while other sources say the actress does not consider herself engaged.

Adding to that discrepancy, which relies on a single unnamed source for the assertion that they are indeed engaged, an unnamed Mexico-based rep for Vergara told Peopleenespanol.com that, as of today, Sofia is not engaged.

People did report that Sofia Vergara and Nick Loeb, a noted businessman, traveled to Mexico together to celebrate her birthday weekend. The magazine reported that the pair repaired their broken relationship in June after it was reported that Loeb had been unfaithful, but that a source said there are compromises to work out on both sides.

On Tuesday, the website Wonderwall added to the controversy when it reported that the couple are engaged. The rumor has also been reported by the Los Angeles Times.

It remains to be seen what actually happened this past weekend in Mexico, but two things are definitely true. Sofia Vergara and Nick Loeb are talking, and she has a big ring. The rest is all hearsay -- for now.
