Soldier Allegedly Raped 16-Year-Old Girl In Military Base

An Australian soldier was accused of smuggling and raping a 16-year-old girl in a military base in Brisbane.

The 24-year-old soldier, whose identity was withheld, was arrested and charged with one count of rape, Wednesday. He was believed to have smuggled the teenager past security at the Gallipoli Barracks at Enoggera, Brisbane, by putting her in the boot of a car on Jan. 14. According to ABC News, the girl was smuggled out of the military base in a similar manner and dropped back to her place by another unidentified soldier. The other soldier was not charged.

Although most of the details involved in the case were not confirmed by the Queensland police officials, they did state that an investigation was launched into the matter and that the suspect was “due to appear at Brisbane Magistrates court on Feb. 26.”

“An Australian Army soldier was taken into custody by the Queensland Police. It is understood the soldier was taken into custody in relation to an allegation of sexual assault. The soldier has been formally charged with the alleged offence and has since been released on bail,” the Australian Department of Defense told News.com in a statement.

The statement added: "Defense takes all allegations of unacceptable behavior very seriously and investigates these matters thoroughly. As the matter is under investigation by the Queensland Police Service it would be inappropriate for Defense to comment."

According to the army base's official Facebook page, “Enoggera Barracks is an Australian Army base in the northwestern Brisbane suburb of Enoggera in Queensland. It was officially established in the early 20th century when the area was used for field training, although the area was used by military units as far back as the mid-19th century. Since then it has been developed into a modern military base, which is now home to units of the 7th and 11th Brigades as well as the headquarters of the 1st Division and the 16th Aviation Brigade.”
