On the night of July 24, a high-speed passenger train traveling through the Galicia region in northwestern Spain derailed while moving on a curved portion of the track. According to Spanish newspaper El Pais, as of 8:00 a.m., 130 people have been injured, with 20 under critical care. Fatalities have risen to 79 people.

On July 25, a video was released of the train derailment. The short clip shows the train approaching the curve at a high rate of speed and begins to derail with the passenger cars smashing into the wall, as the the locomotive engine tumbled into the camera recording that section of the track.

The train, consisting of eight passenger cars and two locomotives, was carrying 226 people, including 222 passengers and four crew members. As for what caused the crash, government delegate, Samuel Juarez, told El Pais that there is still an ongoing investigation, but added “it’s possible that the speed [of the train] may have had something to do with the [derailment].”

The train was traveling 190 kph (118 mph) on the curved portion of the track when it derailed, over double the speed limit of that portion of the track, 80 kph (50 mph).

The train derailment is currently under investigation.
