‘Speechless’ Renewed For Season 2 At ABC; Minnie Driver, John Micah Fowler React

“Speechless” cast members Minnie Driver, John Ross Bowie, Cedric Yarbrough, Mason Cook, Micah Fowler and Kyla Kenedy were all thrilled and grateful after it was announced on Friday that the ABC series was renewed for Season 2.

Driver, who plays Maya on the Scott Silveri-created series, took to Instagram and shared a GIF of an unassuming man doing a “yes” gesture. Apparently, in addition to the show’s Season 2 renewal, the British actress is also celebrating Chelsea’s recent win in the English Premier League.

Yarbrough and Kenedy, who portray Kenneth and Dylan, respectively, took to Twitter to thank everyone who made the Season 2 renewal possible. Cook, meanwhile, shared a GIF of his character Ray celebrating.

Fowler, who plays JJ on the show, also posted a couple of GIFs of himself showing how happy he is about the Season 2 renewal.

Bowie, meanwhile, revealed in a tweet that he’s “very moved” by the show’s Season 2 renewal because it’s “his second season of anything.” Bowie revealed in a recent interview with AfterBuzz TV that he wasn’t the first choice for the role of Jimmy, making the Season 2 renewal even more meaningful to him.

“Around February [last year], I started hearing this show about a family who got a kid in a wheelchair. And it doesn’t sound it’s gonna be very good,” Bowie shared. “Then I heard that Scott Silveri was doing it. I’d read for Scott for a couple of other things in the past. I always like his writing. He’s really a good joke writer. … So I auditioned.”

“I read and I guess it goes well. And they were like, ‘Okay great! Thank you, John,’” Bowie continued. “And I’m like, ‘Okay guys, good luck with whatever movie star you’re taking into doing television.’ And I headed out and they’re like, ‘Oh yeah, they really liked you … they have a pin in you,’ which … means basically that if you get another job they would appreciate you telling them about it but you don’t have their job so I have a pin in me. I’m like, ‘Okay that’s fine.’”

The following month, the show cast Minnie Driver as the DiMeo matriarch, and Bowie was called in to have a chemistry read with the actress. “It really went well,” Bowie said of the chemistry read. “We had a really easy chemistry, and we were cracking each other up. [But] I got the call later that evening that they were going to try to make it with a bigger name. But they said, ‘Stick around. You still have a pin in you.’”

“I know the guy, he’s a great guy,” Bowie said of the bigger star they considered for role of Jimmy. “But he just couldn’t make a schedule work and they just panicked, and the night before the table read, I got the job.”

Next week’s episode 23 of “Speechless” is the show’s Season 1 finale. According to the synopsis for the episode, the DiMeos get ready for a flight to JJ’s summer camp. Maya gets a surprise at the airport, while Ray sees his vacation as a chance to reinvent himself. Meanwhile, Jimmy and Dylan turn the trip into a father-daughter bonding moment.

“Speechless” Season 1, episode 23, titled “C-A--CAMP,” airs on Wednesday, May 17 at 8:30 p.m. EDT on ABC.
