‘Splatoon 2’ New Robot Bomb Sub Weapon & Returning Weapons Detailed By Nintendo Japan
Splatoon 2 is gearing up for its big E3 showcase, but before that happens, Nintendo Japan just revealed a new sub weapon as well as some slightly altered returning favorites. The Robot Bomb just might be your new nightmare.
The Robot Bomb, seen in the screenshot below, is a brand new sub weapon that’s meant to be paired with Roller weapons like the Octobrush. In terms of its use, it’s basically a mobile grenade. Once the robots are deployed, they walk toward the nearest opponent and detonate in the best position for a successful splat. From the demo video it’s not quite clear if the player controls the robot or if it acts on its own. One thing that is emphasized, however, is just how cute the new projectile is.

In case you thought you missed something, the return of the Octobrush is actually a new detail too. The tweet revealing the news doesn’t seem to suggest any changes to the existing brush, only that it’s both fast and swingable. Its sub weapon is the Robot Bomb and its special is called Jetpack. The Jetpack was previously accessible during Splatoon 2’s Global Testfire for those who were able to play it.
While also not quite as new, tweets from Monday suggest a slightly revised version of the existing Disruptor will be back as well. In Splatoon 2, it will apparently have a variation of the name Poison Mist. Like the Disruptor, its main purpose is to slow down opponents for a short period of time. However, because it’s based on a mist, its impact is most effective for those who stay inside the blast radius. In other words, if you’re caught in a swarm of mist it may be more damaging, but it will be less hurtful than a Disruptor if it’s avoided. Previous trailer analyses showed Purple Mist in multiplayer, and now we know precisely what it does.
As all of the above information comes from basic Japanese web translations, however, it should be taken with a grain of salt. We’re fairly confident that the essentials of what we’ve described are correct, but smaller details and names are definitely subject to change.

With that disclaimer out of the way, these tweets are still probably the biggest reveal we’ve had regarding new Splatoon 2 weapons for quite some time. Until now, much of Nintendo’s marketing emphasis has been placed on the game’s new main weapon, the Splat Dualies. These sub weapons aren’t necessarily a drastic change from the ones used in the original game, but at least they show some attempt to add fresh ideas to an already popular concept. Those who follow our coverage closely will know this isn’t the only new gun we’ve detailed over the past few days either. We’ve also discussed a P90-like redesign of the Hero Shot that appears to be accessible in offline and online modes.
Splatoon 2 is set to release July 21 on Nintendo Switch. Watch the Splatoon Tumblr carefully for English translations over the next few days or tune in to Nintendo’s E3 Spotlight presentation on June 13.
