'Star Wars 7' Spoilers Revealed At 'The Force Awakens' Event; 4 Biggest Things We Learned From The 'Star Wars' Celebration
The moment fans have been waiting for has finally arrived. Director J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy took to the stage at the annual "Star Wars" Celebration in Anaheim, California, Thursday to debut the latest teasers from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
The big presentation was full of new information, surprise appearances from the cast and some pretty noteworthy droids. Oh, and of course Abrams and Kennedy dropped the second teaser trailer for the film, complete with some very familiar faces.
For those of you who missed the official live stream at Starwars.com, don’t worry, we’ve compiled all of the hottest reveals and new information from the hourlong event. Check out everything you missed, or simply want to see again:
1. New Planet
When the topic of filming in Abu Dhabi came up, Abrams was asked about the desert landscape that appeared in the first moments of the 88-second teaser trailer. Many fans speculated that it was the planet that appeared in “Star Wars: A New Hope” so many years ago, Tattoine. But the director said they actually were seeing a brand new planet called Jakku. Although he refused to reveal any more information, he did confirm both that it was not Tattoine and that fans would learn a lot more about it in the future.
Later, Daisy Ridley joined the duo on stage to discuss her character, Rey. In describing who Rey is and how the audience will meet her, she revealed that her character starts off on Jakku. No one was able to give any real details about how this will fit in with the larger story of the movie, but it’s certainly a name to keep on one’s radar.
2. Newbies
In addition to the new droid, BB-8, new cast members Ridley (Rey), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron) and John Boyega (Finn) opened up about how their characters will be introduced when the film opens Dec. 18.
Ridley answered first, revealing that Rey is a bit of a scavenger who enjoys a solitary life. Apparently she tends to keep herself removed from society until she “meets another character and an adventure begins.”
Boyega went next. After revealing what a colossal “Star Wars” fan he is, and telling an anecdote about getting Harrison Ford to sign his merchandise, he gave fans a taste of what they can expect from this fresh new character.
“When we find Finn, he’s in incredible danger, and the way he reacts to this danger launches him into the ‘Star Wars’ universe in an amazing way,” he dished.
Many may remember Finn as the panicked stormtrooper that opened the 88-second teaser trailer. When asked if he’s a stormtrooper, Abrams reluctantly gave him permission to say “yes.” When asked if that makes him a good guy or a bad guy in this film, the actor cleverly dodged the question, saying, “I’ve just lost my memory.” Fans will just have to wait to see which side Finn is actually on.
Rounding out the trio of new characters was Oscar Isaac, who plays Poe Dameron. When asked who this character is, an excited Isaac simply called him “the best freaking pilot in the galaxy.” While he wasn’t able to reveal too much more than that, he did reveal a connection to a beloved character from the original. Apparently, the film opens with him on a mission from Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher). From there, his character will meet up with Finn and the two will be off on an unknown adventure. It’s worth mentioning that a lot of this information confirms previous leaked plot details about the new trio of characters, as well as Leia.
3. Not A Boy’s Galaxy Anymore
You don’t have to be a “Star Wars” expert to know that the original trilogy was shockingly light on roles for women. Obviously it was a different time and all that, but the fact of the matter is, Abrams and Kennedy undertook to introduce more female characters to the rich universe. Luckily, they couldn’t be happier to do so.
During the panel, the moderator read some questions from the audience. One asked the group what kind of character they would be if they were actually in the “Star Wars” universe.
“I don’t think I have much of a choice,” Ridley said. “But I’m gonna say that that’s going to change.”
The words were met with an eruption of applause from the crowd. Later, when Fisher and the rest of the original cast (minus Harrison Ford) took the stage, she discussed what it was like to have a few more women on set this time around.
“I liked being the only one when I was 19 and that was possible,” the 58-year-old actress said with a laugh. "But now I need some backup.”
Fisher was also asked if her famous double-bun hair style would appear in the new movie as well.
“The buns are, you know. … They’re tired now. So we’re not going to have any futuristic buns. But, we’re going to have something new that I think we’ll all be into,” she said. “And it’s not the metal bikini.”
4. Teaser Trailer No. 2
Of course, Abrams and Kennedy used this event to debut the new teaser for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Although many people speculated that the first full-sized trailer would debut, it was also revealed that a trailer will drop alongside “Avengers: Age of Ultron” when it hits theaters May 1. It’s unclear if the trailer in the theater will be the same, or if Marvel fans can expect a completely new video. In any case, the new teaser gives fans all the new footage and character reveals they could hope for as well as a look at Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew).
