‘Star Wars: Rise Of Skywalker’: Gay Kiss Is Not Between Finn And Poe
“Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker” director J.J. Abrams confirmed that there would be legitimate LGBTQ representation in “Episode IX,” and now, reports confirm that there is a same-sex kiss. However, it’s not between Finn and Poe Dameron.
Ever since “The Force Awakens,” there has been vocal support among some fans for Poe (Oscar Isaac) and Finn (John Boyega) to get together. The actors even seemed to encourage it, but the long-teased gay couple in “Star Wars” is actually female.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, two women share a kiss during a celebratory scene in the movie. “They are minor characters and not heavily featured in the film,” the outlet reports. Exact identities of the LGBTQ characters were not revealed.
Earlier this month, Abrams told Variety that Finn and Poe would not be getting together. “That relationship to me is a far deeper one than a romantic one,” Abrams told Variety. “It is a deep bond that these two have, not just because of the trial by fire in which they met, but also because of their willingness to be as intimate as they are, as afraid as they, as unsure as they are, and still be bold, and still be daring and brave.”
Disney, which owns Lucasfilm, hasn’t been great about LGBTQ representation on the big screen thus far. GLAAD has given the Walt Disney Company a “failing” grade for representation for four out of the last five years of movies. (They were bumped up to “poor” in 2017.)
However, they seem to be taking small steps to rectify that. In 2017, they had two men dancing in “Beauty and the Beast.” Over the summer, “Avengers: Endgame” featured Joe Russo making a cameo as a man speaking about dating another man, and Chris Evans’ Captain America was accepting.
Marvel Studios will further their LGBTQ representation in the future as “The Eternals,” due out in fall, is set to feature a queer superhero. The comic book studio has also confirmed that Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie will identify more obviously as bisexual in “Thor: Love and Thunder.”
Fans will have to wait and see if Lucasfilm does the same with upcoming “Star Wars” projects.
“Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker” releases Friday.
