“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” may mark the return of the controversial midichlorians. Director JJ Abrams has confirmed that he spoke to George Lucas on the subject before working on the movie. The upcoming film will connect all the trilogies and the mysteries of the Force may be an important part of that connection.

Midichlorans were introduced as a concept in the prequel trilogy to explain how the Force works. People with a high concentration of midichlorians in their blood were supposed to be more powerful. The concept faced severe backlash from the fans, and it was one of the reason why many did not like the prequel movies.

In a recent interview, Abrams confirmed that he spoke to Lucas about midichlorians, Games Radar reported. The director said that the “Star Wars” creator loves the concept, but didn’t reveal if he used it in the upcoming film. He did say that the discussion was “very helpful.”

Lucas worked on “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” as a creative consultant. There were also rumors about him having a bigger role during the reshoots of the movie. It remains to be seen what ideas Lucas suggested for the movies and how many of those ideas were accepted.

In a previous interview, Abrams suggested that he had taken bigger risks for the upcoming film, which is something he would not have done for “The Force Awakens,” Games Radar reported. The director admitted that he let himself be “freer,” as opposed to having a specific approach to making the first film in the sequel trilogy.

Did Abrams take a big risk and bring back the midichlorians in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”? The fans will have to wait until Dec. 20, when the film will be released, to find out for sure. So far, the only link to all the films has been Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid).
