Steve Harvey's Miss Universe Results Card Revealed; See What Could Have Caused His Mistake At 2015 Pageant
Comedian Steve Harvey made headlines when he accidentally announced the wrong winner of the 2015 Miss Universe Pageant on Dec. 20 while hosting the event. A photo of the results card he was given has been released, which may explain what led to him to announce Miss Colombia the winner over Miss Philippines.
The card, pictured below, reveals the second runner-up first in the top left corner, which reads "2nd Runner Up: USA." Underneath that is the first runner-up, "1st Runner Up: Colombia." At the bottom of the card on the far right it reads in all caps, "MISS UNIVERSE 2015: PHILIPPINES." Could Harvey have read the card too quickly and miss the winner on the far right?
Sunday, Harvey declared Miss Colombia 2015, Adriana Gutierrez, the winner instead of first runner-up. When he was notified of the mistake, he revealed his error to the audience. He soon after announced the real winner was Miss Philippines 2015, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.
Following an awkward moment and unrest in the crowd, Harvey spoke to the audience one more time to apologize to them and all of the contestants. "Listen folks, let me just take control of this," he said. "This is exactly what's on the card, I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake. It was on the card."
Wurtzbach told Entertainment Tonight after that show that she "didn't know what was going on," and still kept asking her manager if she really won. Gutierrez was upset by what happened and was crying backstage, but Wurtzbach didn't feel it was right to comfort her.
"I was actually very close to her already, but I decided that maybe it was bad timing to do it now — to apologize to her for what happened. So maybe I'll do that in the future," Wurtzbach said.
