  • "Resident Evil Remake" has so far performed well below recent series installments despite the survival-horror franchise’s continued popularity over the years

Expect the next chapters in the “Resident Evil” series to be longer than previous games developed by Capcom with its RE Engine.

After Capcom said that it was considering increasing the price of its games for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, Video Games Chronicle notes that a series of tweets by Capcom insider Dusk Golem discussed the length of the company’s “Resident Evil” titles that are currently under development.

“Resident Evil 3 Remake” was just released this past April and was questioned by reviewers for the short length of its campaign. Video Games Chronicle’s critic even called the game “a short adventure with not much to do afterward.”

According to the game length aggregation site “How Long to Beat,” the main story of “Resident Evil 3” takes six hours to complete. That is significantly less time than other titles developed with Capcom’s RE Engine.

That same site measures the main story of “Resident Evil 7: Biohazard” at 9.5 hours and “Resident Evil 2” at 8.5 hours. Meanwhile, “Devil May Cry 5” clocked in at 11 hours.

This past June Capcom announced, “Resident Evil Village” (previously known as “Resident Evil 8,” ahead of a planned release in 2021. Dusk Golem claimed that it “will be the longest RE Engine game to date.”

“Without saying too much the other stuff coming up should follow a similar trend,” Dusk Golem added.

Earlier this year, Video Games Chronicle revealed that Capcom is developing “Resident Evil 4 Remake.” The project is in development at Osaka-based M-Two, the new studio founded by former PlatinumGames head Tatsuya Minami, which has been preparing for its development since 2018.

Originally released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2005, “Resident Evil 4” has since been ported to numerous other platforms. According to “How Long to Beat,” the main story for this game takes 16 hours to complete.

The original “Resident Evil” was released on the PlayStation in 1996 and was known as “Biohazard” in Japan. Its main story could be completed in approximately seven hours.

Capcom has indicated this week that it is not surprised by the lower sales figures that “Resident Evil 3 Remake” has generated. It has so far performed well below recent series installments despite the survival-horror franchise’s continued popularity over the years.
