Super Bowl 2022 Point Spread: Rams Among Biggest Favorites In Recent NFL History
Four points isn’t usually considered to be very high for an NFL betting line, but the Super Bowl is a different story. That’s why the point spread for the Super Bowl makes the Los Angeles Rams one of the contest’s biggest favorites in recent history.
The Cincinnati Bengals are four-point underdogs against the Rams with the game just nine days away. It’s the first time in four years and the fourth time in 11 years that the Super Bowl features a point spread north of a field goal.
The Kansas City Chiefs settled in as three-point favorites over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in last year’s Super Bowl. Kansas City was only laying 1.5 points over the San Francisco 49ers in 2020. The New England Patriots were favored in every Super Bowl from 2017 to 2019, though the line was never more than four points.
The biggest point spread of the last decade came in 2016 when the Carolina Panthers were five-point favorites over the Denver Broncos. Denver pulled off a 24-10 upset. Von Miller won the Super Bowl MVP award and will suit up for the Rams at Sofi Stadium on Feb. 13.
The Super Bowl point spread last eclipsed five points in 2009. As seven-point favorites, the Pittsburgh Steelers held off the Arizona Cardinals 27-23.
It’s been 14 years since the Super Bowl featured a double-digit point spread. As 12-point underdogs against the undefeated Patriots, the New York Giants pulled off one of the greatest upsets in sports history. The Giants beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl twice in four years.
Five teams have been favored by at least 14 points in the Super Bowl. The Patriots upset the Rams in 2002 for Tom Brady’s first championship. Joe Namath famously guaranteed victory for the New York Jets over the Baltimore Colts as 18-point underdogs in 1969.
As historic 18.5-point favorites in 1995, the 49ers blew out the San Diego Chargers 49-26.
The Bengals have been underdogs in all three of their Super Bowl appearances. Cincinnati is seeking its first title in franchise history.
