The front of the Super Mario Cereal box. Cerealously

For more than three decades, people have loved playing as Mario across dozens of classic video games. That is all well and good, but what if we could eat Mario? In a pleasant development during a chaotic week of news, it sounds like that utopian idea is coming to fruition, according to Engadget.

The cereal blog (more on that later) Cerealously uncovered an upcoming Super Mario Bros. -themed breakfast cereal that you should be able to find in stores in the near future. The cereal was reportedly coming from Kellogg’s. After this rumor took gaming Twitter by storm, gaming tipster @Wario64 seemingly confirmed it:

Then, in a matter of hours after that development, the Kellogg’s UK Twitter account actually confirmed the news:

Sorry to all our friends across the pond. You will have to import this gamer’s breakfast. Also, shout out to Cerealously for capturing the cereal blogging niche we did not know we needed. Per Cerealously, Super Mario Cereal is a classic Kellogg’s blend of crunchy Power Star oats surrounded by mushroom and question mark box-shaped marshmallow pieces. Nintendo innovates in the world of video games all the time but is apparently happy to play it safe in the world of breakfast treats.

Cerealously claimed some boxes of Super Mario Cereal will work as Amiibo in Super Mario Odyssey for Nintendo Switch. That means you will be able to scan them on your Switch and unlock goodies in the game, so these boxes will likely become collector's items before long.

To be fair, that is probably more pleasant and kid-friendly than eating little Mario and Luigi heads. Video game fans of a certain age (or people who spend way too much time on the internet) might be aware that this is not Nintendo’s first foray into the cereal coliseum. The Nintendo Cereal System line of breakfast cereals ran for three years in the late 1980s, giving kids a way to literally consume their favorite Nintendo Entertainment System games.

Mario cereal is merely the latest in the current trend of Nintendo branching out beyond video games with its powerful stable of original characters. Various Universal Studios theme parks around the world are getting Nintendo-themed attractions starting in 2020, while Mario is supposedly making his grand return to the big screen courtesy of the animation studio behind Minions.
