‘Supergirl’ Season 3 Spoilers: EP Teases Carlos Bernard Appearance As Maggie’s Dad
It looks like fans are in for a treat in Season 3, episode 3 of “Supergirl.”
In a recent interview with TVLine, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said that the hour is one of the episodes of the CW series they are most proud of.
“It’s a very raw episode,” Kreisberg said of the installment, which marks the first appearance of Carlos Bernard as Maggie’s (Floriana Lima) dad Oscar Rodas. “Floriana and Carlos are so amazing in it.”
According to the synopsis for the episode, Eliza (Helen Slater) throws Alex (Chyler Leigh) and Maggie a wedding shower, prompting Maggie to reach out to her estranged father.
“It’s funny, it’s sad, it’s heartwarming, it’s got cool visual effects,” Kreisberg teased of the episode. “‘Supergirl’ is at its best when speaking about the human condition and how we treat each other, so it’s a really special episode — hopefully one that is well-remembered.”
Kreisberg didn’t want to reveal too many details about Bernard’s Oscar, but the exec producer did tell TVLine that it’s “not an easy part” as “he’s not always the most sympathetic figure.” As revealed last season, Maggie grew up in a very conservative family. So when her parents discovered that she’s a lesbian, Maggie and her parents got into a big fight, which ended with her dad kicking her out of the house.
Unfortunately, it looks like the relationship between the father and daughter remains strained when they see each other again in Season 3. Last August, Twitter user @ThemysciraBound uploaded a video of Lima and Bernard filming a scene for the new season. While the dialogue between the two is not clear, it’s obvious that their characters are having a fight.
Twitter user @ThemysciraBound also posted some photos of Lima and Bernard filming a different scene. As seen in the pictures, Maggie hands a photo to her dad, who is seemingly about to leave.
Bernard is best known for his role as Tony Almeida on Fox’s “24.” And because Kreisberg is a huge “24” fan, he was excited for Bernard joining the show. “This was so exciting for me because I’m a big ‘24’ nut,” shared the exec producer, before revealing that the 54-year-old actor had actually auditioned for other roles on the show before finally landing the role of Oscar. “His name had come up before for a couple of other parts and it never worked out, but it seems like things often don’t work out so they can later come play the perfect part for them,” Kreisberg said.
“Supergirl” airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EDT on The CW.
