It looks like “Supergirl” Season 3 is going to start with a somber tone.

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, series star Melissa Benoist hinted at a gloomy Season 3 for her character Kara, who was left heartbroken following the escape of Mon-El (Chris Wood) from Earth at the end of the Season 2 finale. “The tone is definitely different this season,” Benoist said. “Obviously things were not so great for Kara at the end of Season 2, having to send Mon-El into we don’t know where. He went into a chasm in space, and it’s definitely going to affect her.”

Season 3’s darker tone is evident in the trailer released at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this month. In it, Kara deals with Mon-El’s departure and appears to be blaming herself for the sacrifice he made. “I tried to be a human but I’m not. Kara Danvers was a mistake,” Kara — who is seemingly being too hard on herself — says in the clip.

While the cast of the show were all tight-lipped about Mon-El’s current location, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg did say (via TV Insider) that “the more astute comic book fans may have a semi-good guess as to where Mon-El went.” Kreisberg added that the Mon-El’s whereabouts “is one of the central mysteries at the start of the season.”

As to how Season 3 will begin, David Harewood — who plays J’onn on the series — told ComicBook.com: “Season 3 picks up minutes later, just after Season 2 ended, so you don’t have this whole enormous leap you’re going to have to make.”

In related news, “Supergirl” recently cast a bunch of new faces for its upcoming season. As announced at Comic-Con, Adrian Pasdar, Yael Grobglas, Carl Lumbly and Emma Tremblay will all appear in Season 3.

Pasdar will play ruthless real-estate developer Morgan Edge who immediately finds himself at odds with Kara and Lena (Katie McGrath). Grobglas will appear as DC villainess Psi, while Lumbly will show up as J’onn’s father, M’yrnn J’onzz. Tremblay, meanwhile, will portray the role of Ruby, an independently minded “Supergirl” fan whose obsession with the Girl of Steel ends up putting her in grave danger.

“Supergirl” Season 3 premieres on Monday, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
