‘Supernatural’ Ending With Season 15: ‘We’ve Cried Some Tears,’ Jared Padalecki Says
“Supernatural” is The CW’s longest-running show, but it’ll come to an end soon. Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins announced that the sci-fi/fantasy drama will finish its run next year.
The actors released a video on social media Friday afternoon announcing the news. They revealed that they’d just informed the crew that “Supernatural” would end next season, and they wanted fans to hear directly from them that the Winchesters’ were coming to the end of the road.
“We just told the crew that though we’re very, very excited about moving into our fifteenth season, it will be our last,” Ackles told fans.
“Supernatural” launched on The WB in 2005 and was renewed for Season 15 earlier this year. The drama follows Sam and Dean Winchesters as they hunt demons and monsters and occasionally fight Lucifer himself.
It was an emotional announcement for the men, especially Padalecki. The Sam actor has been with the show for the entirety of its fun and even met wife Genevieve Padalecki on “Supernatural.”
“We’ve cried some tears and we’ll cry some more,” a glassy-eyed Padalecki said.
“But we’re gonna save the emotion for next season!” Ackles added.
The Dean actor added that the creator, Eric Kripke, was proud of the show and the tightknit fandom around it. “A little word from Eric Kripke, the creator of this world and these characters: in a show about family, it is amazing and it is the pride of his life that it became family,” Ackles said.

In Ackles’ caption for the video, he teased, “One more round for the Winchester brothers. Though nothing ever really ends in Supernatural...does it?”
“It’s been a hell of a run, and we couldn’t be more grateful for all of it. No matter what, we’ll always all be #SPNFamily,” Collins wrote in his tweet.
“Supernatural” hit its milestone 300th episode earlier this year, but CW president Mark Pedowitz insisted that the network had no interest in canceling the show. The show’s ratings have held steady, and Pedowitz noted that it would really be up to the stars to end the show.
“As long as the ratings hold up and the guys [Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles] want to do it, it’s really that simple. They have created something about these two brothers that actually transcends,” he said in January (via Deadline).
The show has a truly dedicated fan base, often called the SPN family. In addition to keeping the show on the air, they turn out in droves to support charities that the actors support.
They raised nearly half a million dollars for Hurricane Harvey relief, launched by Ackles’ Family Business Beer Company. Since Padalecki revealed his struggles with depression, they have raised money for To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA), a nonprofit that works with those who struggle with depression, self-harm, addiction and suicide. Collins founded Random Acts, a nonprofit focusing on lending help to various good causes.
“Supernatural” Season 14 will continue to air Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST on The CW. The final season will start next fall.
