Taylor Swift's ex-boyfriend Conor Kennedy secretly joined Ukraine's fight against Russia.
Last week, the 28-year-old actor and model son of environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. revealed via Instagram that earlier this year, he enlisted in Ukraine's International Legion after Russian military forces invaded the Eastern European country in February.
It is unclear when Kennedy — who is also the great-nephew of former President John F. Kennedy and grandson of the late attorney general and New York senator Robert F. Kennedy — enlisted and how long he was in Ukraine, but Page Six reported that he has since returned home safely.
"I was deeply moved by what I saw happening in Ukraine over the past year. I wanted to help. When I heard about Ukraine's International Legion, I knew I was going, and I went to the embassy to enlist the next day," he wrote on Instagram Friday, alongside a picture of his friend on the frontlines in Ukraine.
Kennedy said he wanted to personally deliver the news before the story comes out in the media, explaining that he wanted to "make the best of it and encourage others to take action."
Kennedy shared that he only informed one person in the U.S. about his enlistment and introduced his real name to one person on the ground overseas during his service. He said that he did not want to be "treated differently there" or to make his family and friends worry.
"Going in, I had no prior military experience and wasn't a great shot, but I could carry heavy things and learned fast. I was also willing to die there. So, they soon agreed to send me to the northeastern front," he wrote.
He did not go into detail about the length of his service, but Kennedy said that he didn't stay there long.
He went on to reveal that he "liked" being a soldier despite fearing for his life and that he would "take all the risks" they took "all over again."
"My time in Ukraine wasn't long, but I saw a lot and I felt a lot. I liked being a soldier, more than I had expected. It is scary," Kennedy wrote in his post. "But life is simple, and the rewards for finding courage and doing good are substantial."
Kennedy described the war as "horrific" before praising the brave soldiers and Ukrainian citizens he came to know for fighting in what he called a "revolution."
Earlier this year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky created the International Legion and asked volunteers from other countries to join his country's fight against Russia.
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba announced that about 20,000 people from 52 countries volunteered within a week, according to Time.
"This war will shape the fate of democracy in this century," Kennedy wrote in his post, before urging his followers to help in their personal capacity, whether it be to join the International Legion, help on the border or donate medical supplies.
"Every day, someone there [Ukraine] sacrifices everything for a lasting peace. They can't be asked to act alone," he concluded.
Kennedy and Swift dated in 2012, during which they spent time together at his family's compound in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. In September of that year, they broke up after a few months of dating.
The song "Begin Again," from Swift's fourth studio album "Red," was rumored to be about the young Kennedy.
