A 16-year-old girl in India, who left home following an argument with parents, was gang-raped twice in less than four hours.

On July 29, the girl, who is believed to be mentally challenged, left her home in the western state of Maharashtra after a fight with her family.

She approached two rickshaw drivers, identified as 26-year-old Mohd Touseef and 25-year-old Sana, who took the teenager to a friend’s residence and raped her. Two others also raped the girl inside the residence along with Touseef and Sana. They then handed the girl over to two other men who raped her inside a rickshaw and fled the scene, The Times of India reported.

Later, when two rickshaw drivers noticed the girl loitering around, they asked her if she needed something. After learning that the girl wanted to go to another town, the two men dropped her at the railway station and gave her some money.

That was when a team of railway police spotted the girl and approached her after suspecting something amiss. She was then handed over to a shelter where it was revealed that the girl was raped, New Indian Express reported.

A police case was filed Sunday and based on the girl’s statement, four of the six accused were taken into custody and charged.

After investigation, it came to the light that the girl was raped last year too when she left her residence following a family dispute. It wasn’t clear if the girl was then handed back to the family.

Cases of rape have been on the rise in India in the last few years. Rape is now the fourth most common crime committed against women in the country. In 2017 alone, over 32,500 cases of rape were registered, that is, about 90 rape cases per day.

Last month, a 12-year-old girl's family in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu found out she was raped by her 43-year-old uncle when the girl was already nine months pregnant. The accused was taken into custody on rape charges after the girl's parents filed police complaint.
