‘Teen Mom OG’ Episode 2 Recap: Maci Bookout Slams Ryan Edwards' Parenting Skills; Catelynn Lowell Has Gender Reveal Party
The “Teen Mom OG” cast continued their separate journeys on episode 2 of the hit MTV docuseries Monday. Find out what Catelynn Lowell, Amber Portwood, and Maci Bookout were up to in the installment titled “Back to School.” The fourth official "Teen Mom OG" star, Farrah Abraham, has yet to make her debut on the series.
MACI
In Monday's installment, Maci was prepping for her son Bentley’s first day of kindergarten. While Maci was excited for Bentley to start school, her ex Ryan Edwards said he wouldn’t be able to make it to his first day because he had to work.
“He doesn’t get it. He doesn’t care,” Maci complained of Ryan to her live-in boyfriend Taylor McKinney.
“The fears you have are legitimate fears,” he said, advising her to see a therapist to help solve her relationship issues with Ryan.
Bentley’s parents, Jen and Larry, attempted to talk some sense into Ryan over a meal. Their efforts, however, did not spark any change in their son. Ryan stormed out of the restaurant after Bentley, who was also present for the outing, revealed that his “momma’s house” is his “real home.” Soon after, Larry made it clear he was over his son’s behavior.
“I believe he’s got an attitude,” Larry, who was visibly shaking, told the producers.
Despite the drama with Ryan, Maci continued her motherly duties by prepping Bentley for his first day of school. While Bentley said he was excited to go to school and learn how to read, Maci was clearly teary-eyed during the experience.
Following the drop off sans Ryan, Maci took Taylor's advice and went to speak with a therapist. Her appointment quickly turned emotional after Maci revealed her upset over Ryan's alleged lack of parenting skills to the professional.
“As far as me and Ryan and Bentley are concerned.... He’s very, very absent. Very," Maci said. "I don’t want to lie to Bentley and tell him that everything’s great and awesome. But I also don’t want to ruin the picture of his dad that he has in his head. You know? I don’t want to break his heart.”
Maci revealed, through tears, that Ryan is not only important to Bentley, but that he is also important to her. "I want to be able to call him and discuss how Bentley's morning went. I'm angry. I'm like, why should you be apart of it? You don't deserve it," she said.
AMBER
With her relationship with Gary Shirley back on track, Amber joined him to take their daughter Leah school supplies shopping before her first day of kindergarten. Their friendly outing quickly turned into obvious flirting, Gary later revealing to a friend that he was unsure about his future with Amber.
The following day, with Gary’s girlfriend Kristina out of the house, Amber made at appearance at his home to help get Leah ready for her first day of school. After Leah’s milestone was interrupted by a cameo by Kristina in the school’s parking lot due to her daughter's attendance at the same school, Amber refused to walk her daughter into her classroom and remained in Gary’s vehicle. “She took it like a champ,” Gary later informed Amber.
Amber later admitted she was upset by Kristina's appearance because it made her realize that her chance at a family with Gary was no longer an option. She also shared that she felt like Kristina was too involved in Leah's life. "I feel like I would be doing the wrong thing if I wanted full custody of her. I feel like I would be ripping her out of a home," Amber said.
CATELYNN
After discovering they were expecting their second child in the premiere, Catelynn and Tyler Baltierra headed for an ultrasound appointment in episode 2 to discover their child’s gender. The couple decided to have the ultrasound technician write down their child’s sex in secret in order to learn the baby’s gender alongside their friends and family at a gender reveal party.
Despite her excitement over her pregnancy, Catelynn made her frustrations over her pregnancy weight gain known. While Catelynn was dealing with the effects of pregnancy, Tyler struggled with his relationship with his incarcerated father, Butch. Things took a turn for the positive after the couple decided to announce Catelynn's pregnancy to the world on social media.
After making their baby news official, the duo turned to their attentions to working on baby names. While the duo agreed on a girl name, Novalee Reign, Catelynn was unsure about Tyler's desired boy name, Slade, calling it too permanent.
At the party, Catelynn and Tyler used a piñata to reveal their baby's gender. After pulling a string, it was revealed the couple was expecting their second daughter. As most "Teen Mom" viewers are aware, Catelynn and Tyler gave up their first daughter Carly for adoption on Season 1 of MTV's "16 and Pregnant."
While Tyler appeared disappointed to learn Catelynn was having another girl, he soon after warmed up to the idea. "Tampons, hairspray, mascara... all of my plans are just crumbling," he said. "I'll be excited as time goes on."
Being that the show tapes months in advance, the couple has already since welcomed their daughter. Novalee made her debut on New Year's Day.
"Teen Mom OG" airs Mondays at 10 p.m. EDT on MTV.
