Amber Portwood got candid about her sexuality on "Teen Mom OG."
During Tuesday's episode, the 31-year-old reality TV star came out as bisexual, revealing that she dated a woman for 8 months when she was 20 years old.
Amber made the revelation while discussing her upcoming second memoir, which she said will explore some "real s---," including her sexuality. "People are going to be a bit shocked that I am bisexual. That I have had a relationship with a woman for 8 months before," she told her producer. "I'm really scared right now."
Amber revealed the news to her mom, Tonya, in the episode. "I was calling you for a reason. I'm shaking right now, honestly. I have been bisexual. I'm very attracted to men, but I'm also similarly very attracted to women as well," she was quoted by People as saying.
When her mom asked whether it was a recent realization on her part, Amber confirmed that she has been aware for "years."
Explaining the reason why she is only revealing it to her mom now, she said, "There was so much going on back then that I didn't want to put any more stuff on the family. I was ashamed at the time because [people weren't] as open then. My book that's coming out, I don't point blank say that I'm bisexual, but I do say that I've been with women."
Amber also said that part of the reason was her 12-year-old daughter Leah, whom she shares with ex Gary Shirley. But Tonya assured Amber, "I think [Leah will] be OK with it, to be honest with you. You're my baby regardless."
While Tonya is supportive, Amber suggested that her ex may not react well to her coming out publicly. According to the reality TV personality, Gary knows that she is bisexual but may not be "very open."
"I think he's going to think it's going to be bad for Leah," she said. "He doesn't even like the thought of going to therapy to help our relationship so this is just another embarrassment to them."
When "Teen Mom OG" producers asked her why she decided to come out now, Amber, who also shares 3-year-old James with ex Andrew Glennon, credited her two children.
"[They] are a really big factor of why," she said. "I don't want them to ever think it's bad. I don't want them to look at other people who are like this and think it's bad. Who am I to sit here and hide forever? Which is actually what I was planning on doing anyways. I was going to go to the grave with this."
"Teen Mom OG" airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EDT on MTV.
