A pair of sisters in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh died by suicide around two weeks ago after a man threatened to leak their obscene videos, police said.
The two, aged 12 and 16, jumped into a well in Rewa district on May 23, India Today reported. Their bodies were recovered from the well the next day after they failed to return from a temple visit.
Before their deaths, a 24-year-old man identified as Ravi Chaturvedi allegedly contacted the siblings on the phone and pushed them for marriage.
"When the victims' brother came to know about this, he had a talk with the accused to stop bothering them. After that, the accused started threatening them by saying that he would leak obscene videos of the two sisters," said Mithilesh Yadav, station chief of the Nai Garhi police station.
Authorities have arrested Chaturvedi over the deaths, and a case under Section 305 of the Indian Penal Code (abetment of suicide of a child or insane person) has been registered against him.
A similar incident happened last year when a 32-year-old died by suicide after several minors threatened to leak the victim's sex videos.
The man, identified as Supreeth K, was found dead inside the washroom of a hotel in the state of Karnataka in August. He had consumed poison, an investigation revealed.
A suicide note found at the scene that was supposedly written by Supreeth named four minor boys who he claimed had filmed him and his girlfriend in a "compromising position" during their stay at a hotel.
The group allegedly extorted money from Supreeth and threatened to leak the video if he did not pay them.
Police registered a case of abetment to suicide against the four boys, and they were arrested. The minors later confessed to blackmailing Supreeth.
They had extorted around ₹5,000, or around $70 at the time, but they allegedly wanted more money from Supreeth.
