A 12-year-old boy died after another boy hurled a concrete block at him from a building in Jordan. A soccer match between two rival clubs has reportedly caused the boy's tragic death.

Officials said the incident took place during street celebrations in Amman's eastern Markah neighborhood after a match between two clubs, Al-Wehdat and Al-Faisaly, which were arch-rivals, reported Gulf Today.

The 12-year-old victim, named Hassan Haitham Abu Ramadan, was a fan of Al-Wehdat, the team that defeated Al-Faisaly in a match Friday.

Celebrations spilled onto the streets Friday evening following the victory.

The boy suffered fatal injuries during the celebration when a 16-year-old boy, believed to be a fan of the losing team, dropped a concrete block "out of rage" from the top of a building, said Amer Sartawi, a spokesperson for Jordan's Public Security Department.

The brick landed on the child's head and he died at the scene.

The teenager was arrested and he admitted to dropping the concrete block on the 12-year-old. He was reportedly angry over the outcome of the game.

"The 16-year-old boy has been arrested and admitted to throwing the stone at the victim out of rage from the result of the football match," Sartawi said, adding the teen was referred to the judiciary for further action.

Friday's match between the two clubs reportedly led to violence, injuries and damages to public property, Arab News reported.

Al-Wehdat Club expressed condolences for the death of the young fan. It said the "irresponsible and irrational acts of a very small number of people following Friday's match are alien to Jordanian values."

Representatives from both the Al-Wehdat and Al-Faisaly clubs visited the victim's grieving family Saturday.

Social media users demanded action against violence sparked by sports fanaticism in the country.

"Let's not have sport if played away from humanism and if it would lead to harming our social cohesion," one person wrote, while another said: "I am speechless. We don't need football if it leads to death."
