A 19-year-old in England was left with potentially life-changing injuries after he was brutally attacked on a busy street last week, his mother said.

Mom of four Gemma Mason said she believes her 19-year-old son, whose name was not disclosed, was struck with an object from behind before his mobile phone was stolen while he was waiting for the bus outside the fire station on Radford Road in Coventry between 10:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. on June 1, the Coventry Telegraph reported.

Mason said that the attack occurred just days after her son celebrated his birthday and that he has little to no recollection of it due to being hit in the head.

“It looks like someone hit him with something hard, I am not sure what it was, and took his mobile phone,” she told the outlet.

The attacker or attackers are believed to have attempted to sell his mobile phone the day after the robbery, according to the outlet.

The incident left the 19-year-old with head injuries that Mason said could be “life-changing,” including hearing loss and vision impairment.

“He is still in the hospital. His skull is fractured in multiple places, but he is so much better than what he was. He managed to get out of bed briefly for the first time, but he might have lost his hearing in one ear,” the mother said. “He still cannot hear in his ear, and his vision is still quite blurry.”

Mason recalled the night police informed her of the attack on her son, saying she "went into a state of shock."

She also expressed her gratitude to the passerby who called emergency services for help for her son on the night of the attack.

“I am just trying to be strong for him. He has got two sisters and a brother as well, you have to just try and get through it as a family, I guess,” Mason said.

Police have launched an investigation into the assault. No arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified as of this writing.

Detectives believe that any witnesses could hold "vital information" about how the teenager was injured.

Police encourage those who may have been in the area at the time of the attack and have information related to the incident to contact West Midlands Police online or on 101. They can also contact Crimestoppers for free and anonymously on 0800 555 111 or visit www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
