Two teenagers have been arrested after they were caught on camera throwing a lit firecracker at the fuel pump of a gas station in India's Gujarat state earlier this week, officials said.
The two teens — 18-year-old Mohammad Irfan Qureshi and an unnamed minor boy — were refueling their motorcycle at a gas station along the Vesu-Univesity Road in Surat city Monday when Qureshi threw a lit firecracker at one of the fuel pumps, NDTV reported, citing inspector DK Patel of the Umra police station.
The pair exited the station on their vehicle. An attendant standing beside the pump kicked the lit firecracker away seconds before it burst and averted an accident, footage of the incident showed.
The manager of the gas station lodged a complaint with the Umra police station Tuesday under sections 285 and 286 (negligent conduct) and 336 (endangering human life or personal safety) of the Indian Penal Code, according to Patel.
Qureshi, who is a resident of Mahidharpura, as well as his minor accomplice were later arrested Wednesday with the help of surveillance footage, the inspector said.
"Since the CCTV had captured the scooters' number plate, we managed to locate and detain the teenagers," Patel was quoted as saying.
The duo confessed that they threw the firecracker for fun, and there was no other motive behind the act, according to Patel.
A similar incident happened in Canada several years ago when a man threw a firecracker at a set of fuel pumps at a gas station.
The unnamed Marystown man, then 20, had thrown the explosive device at the diesel pumps of the Salt Pond Esso gas station in Burin on June 21, 2015.
The man was later arrested and charged with mischief endangering life and a breach of probation after the incident was reported to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
"Worst case scenario we would have had a fuel explosion if there had been fuel on the ground where this device was deployed, and certainly we're looking at the potential of ignition and from there it could have been... things could have gotten out of hand fairly quickly," Cpl. Phonse Foley of the RCMP was quoted as saying.
