'Tekken 7' News: Iconic Character To Make Return In Season 4
KEY POINTS
- Last seen in "Tekken 2," Kunimitsu is the first new character announced for "Tekken 7" Season 4
- The Season 4 trailer reveals Kunimitsu's face without a mask for the first time
- "Tekken 7" continues to receive support from Bandai Namco three years after its home debut in 2017
“Tekken” has famously introduced some of the most memorable characters in video games since it debuted on the PlayStation in 1994. But one character from that rich roster has hardly been seen for the past 25 years — until now.
The mask-wearing ninja known as Kunimitsu seemed to have fallen off the “Tekken” map since being introduced in “Tekken 2” in 1995 and making sporadic appearances in only two “Tekken Tag Tournament” games.
That injustice is finally about to be corrected as Bandai Namco has released a launch trailer for Season 4 of “Tekken 7.” In the video, Kunimitsu and her fox mask are clearly seen as is her ninja garb instead of the flowery dress she wore in “Tekken Tag Tournament 2.” She plays the flute before engaging in a rapid but effective battle.
Kunimitsu's fox mask still covers the upper half of her face. However, the trailer also reveals her face without a mask for the first time.
With her young face and lack of a prominent scar, some have suspected that this might not be the original Kunimitsu from the classic “Tekken” titles and could possibly even be her daughter, much like Jin Kazama is the son of Kazuya Mishima and Jun Kazama. After all, this Kunimitsu talks about her mother in her short monologue.
Kunimitsu’s ninja past has long had her linked with the equally mysterious Yoshimitsu as well as Raven, adding even more to her popularity.
There have already been 14 additional characters that can be purchased for “Tekken 7” from both the “Tekken” series as well as from other franchises. These include Akuma from “Street Fighter,” Geese from “Fatal Fury,” Noctis from “Final Fantasy XV” and even the villainous Negan from “The Walking Dead.”
After making its arcade debut in 2015 and in consoles in 2017, “Tekken 7” continues to receive considerable support from Bandai Namco with no end in sight.
Along with Kunimitsu’s arrival comes a new stage for her in the Vermilion Gates and some new updates. These include new moves, improved UI for the game, improved online play, a revamped ranking system dubbed “Tekken Prowess,” another new character and another stage.
This news will surely sate the appetites of many “Tekken” fans, particularly from the early days of the franchise when the roster was comparably smaller and the graphics and gameplay were admittedly much less than what current consoles can do.
