Tesla Of Cruise Ships: World’s First Hybrid-Electric Ship Can Run On Battery Alone
Port of Vancouver on September 26 will welcome the hybrid-electric cruise ship, MS Roald Amundsen. The state of the art ship was unveiled earlier this year by Scandinavian cruise operator Hurtigruten.
The cruise ship is one of the most sustainable cruise vessels with the distinctio of being one of the two hybrid-electric cruise ships in the world.
MS Roald Amundsen utilizes hybrid technology to save fuel and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent.
The Vancouver port authority is making sure that it is accorded a special welcome as part of the policy to encourage ships having a lower carbon emissions footprint.
Port of Vancouver is the first port in Canada to offer shore power, an emissions-reducing initiative, for cruise ships.
Eco-friendly sustainable hybrid technology
MS Roald Amundsen can be called Tesla of the cruise industry as it is similar to the electrically powered Tesla car that set off a revolution in the auto sector by running on batteries.
As a sleek ship, MS Roald Amundsen is modern, energy-efficient, eco-friendly and very luxurious also.
Vancouver based company Corvus Energy created the hybrid battery for MS Roald Amundsen. The extra electric power is helping the ship’s engines to function at optimal levels and reduce fuel usage and cut down on carbon dioxide emissions.
It will also run solely on battery power for a limited time and ensure fuel usage and emissions are limited.
In terms of passenger amenities, the cruise ship boasts of three restaurants that follow Nordic and Norwegian heritage.
It also houses many outdoor infinity pools, hot tubs, saunas, a large gym and spa, and even a science center.
Passenger cabins are luxurious and have private balconies and hot tubs with expansive ocean views.
The arrival and special welcome for the newest ship of Hurtigruten in Vancouver port is a message that the port authority wants more cruise lines around the world to adopt and evolve best practices for running cleaner ships.
