Netflix is starting the New Year by ditching some fan-favorite titles. These beloved movies and TV shows will leave the streaming service in January 2020.

“Friends” leaving Netflix isn’t surprising. After all, it made headlines when WarnerMedia bought back the streaming rights for a reported $425 million ($85 million per year for the next five years). After disappearing from Netflix, “Friends” will be on HBO Max when it launches in the spring.

Other hits expiring from Netflix include the much-loved 1978 movie musical “Grease,” starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, and the bloody 2009 comedy “Zombieland,” starring Emma Stone and Woody Harrelson.

Among the lesser-known movies disappearing is “Short Term 12,” an independent drama about an at-risk youth counselor whose latest group of kids reminds her of her own dark past. However, subscribers definitely know the cast, many of whom have starred in successful mainstream movies and TV shows.

The 2013 movie includes Oscar winners Brie Larson and Rami Malek. Also appearing are rising stars Lakeith Stanfield (“Atlanta,” “Sorry to Bother You”), Kaitlyn Dever (“Unbelievable,” “Booksmart”) and Stephanie Beatriz (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “In The Heights”). Director Daniel Destin Cretton went on to direct Larson in “The Glass Castle” and “Just Mercy” and will soon helm Marvel Studios’ “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.”
