‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Spoilers: Director Compares Film To ‘Captain America: Civil War’
It’s a huge challenge directing any superhero film for Marvel Cinematic Studios, and “Thor: Ragnarok” director Taika Waititi really understands this pressure. However, Waititi is confident that the third film in the “Thor” franchise will blow fans’ minds away.
During a conversation with the A.V. Club, Waititi even compared “Ragnarok” to “Captain America: Civil War” and said that the new film will be better because of the outrageous characters involved. “Sometimes I would stop and think, I’m doing a movie that’s got Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and The Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and every character is so strange and different,” he said. “Civil War it’s just humans, humans with human problems. Ours is creatures and beings and all these sorts of really different characters. Again displaying human problems, but in outer space or in other worlds.”
Aside from the characters Waititi mentioned, there are several more exciting new players in the franchise, such as the villain Hela (Cate Blanchett). The film’s synopsis, which was shared by Entertainment Weekly, reveals Hela’s role: “In Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok — the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization — at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger – the Incredible Hulk!”
Other newbies in the franchise include Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Skurge the Executioner (Karl Urban) and the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum). Valkyrie will reportedly play a huge role in the film as she helps Thor and the Hulk escape from the gladiator arena.
“Thor: Ragnarok” will be released on Nov. 3, 2017.
