‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Spoilers: Taika Waititi Explains Why Thor Uses A Gun
Who is Thor (Chris Hemsworth) without his trusty hammer, Mjölnir? For the past two “Thor” movies, as well as the “Avengers” films, Thor used his hammer to defeat bad guys, both in this world and in Asgard.
But “Thor: Ragnarok,” which is directed by Taika Waititi, will be quite different since Thor is going to be using a different weapon: a gun. When asked why, Waititi told IGN that they wanted to push Thor out of his comfort zone and let him experience something new.
“I think we really wanted to challenge Thor in this film,” the director explained. “He’s challenged more than in any of the other films. He loses the hammer, which is the source of his power, and he’s really on the back foot most of the film. We didn’t want him to be able to utilize magic, or to have Loki’s (Tom Hiddleston) magic. We didn’t want him to have too many advantages. He had to really find his way out of this predicament using his brain and using his friends.”

It is Hela (Cate Blanchett) who will destroy Thor’s hammer and everything else he holds dear. She’s so powerful that even Loki, who is always causing trouble for Thor, will team up with his half brother in order to defeat her. “It’s the kind of destruction that both Thor and Loki have never seen, on a scale of terror they’ve never ever seen before. So, they fall back on their brotherhood fractured though it is to see what they can do to stop her,” Hiddleston said of Loki and Thor’s partnership.
The two of them will also be getting help from newbie Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), who disappeared right after “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”
Ruffalo earlier told Entertainment Weekly that the Hulk will be a changed man in the third “Thor” film, and it seems like he’s learned how to use his rage to his advantage. “He’s much more of a character than the green rage machine you’ve seen in the Avengers movies,” Ruffalo said of his character. “He’s got a swagger. He’s like a god.”
“Thor: Ragnarok” will be released on Nov. 3.
