Tiger Invades Tigress’ Enclosure At Biological Park, Strangles It To Death In Front Of Visitors
A tiger at Sajjangadh Biological Park, Udaipur, India, barged into a tigress’ enclosure Thursday and strangled it to death. The incident occurred in the evening in front of visitors at the park's display section.
The male tiger, 12-year-old Kumar, reportedly pounced on the tigress, named Damini, 15, and a fight ensued.
“The caretaker reportedly tried to create a noise and separate the two, but the tigress was grievously injured and the male strangulated her till she died,” Chetan Singh Deora, divisional forest officer of Udaipur, said in an official statement.
The tiger was kept in an enclosure right next to the tigress. The forest officials claimed that Kumar was very "aggressive" and it trespassed into the tigress enclosure after breaking open the wired fencing by force.
The carcass will be sent for post-mortem Friday and it will be cremated after that. The tiger was being held in a confinement. The case was under investigation.
“As the tiger is a protected species a committee comprising forest, local administration and police officials will be formed for the looking into the incident,” GV Reddy, chairman of Rajasthan State Biodiversity Board, told Free Press Journal.
Calling the incident a “rare occurrence,” an expert, who didn’t wish to be identified, said called for a “thorough investigation” into the incident as “a tiger cannot easily break the fencing of the enclosures.”
