“Tik Tok” singer Kesha has opened up about the time when she was insecure about her looks and also suffered from eating disorders. In a bid to look skinny, the songstress would starve herself to a point where she would get unconscious. Kesha however soon realized that she “needed help” and checked into a rehab.

"I've had a lot of ups and downs," Kesha told Vogue in an interview published Wednesday. "It's been quite a journey. [With the criticism about my body,] I went to a dark place," she added. However, the singer was surprised that her eating disorder was taken in a positive way by people around her. She tortured her body by starving, but instead of throwing criticism at her, people praised her looks.

There was a point when Kesha started to think that “being hungry to the point of feeling almost faint was a positive thing.” The lack of food and constant hunger made her unhappy and depressed. She wanted to get out of the situation and it was her own music that acted as an inspiration for the singer.

One day the 28-year-old singer was singing her song, “We R Who We R” and realized that though she believes in the lyrics strongly, she is not following the same in her real life. She called up her mother saying that she needed help. The “Timber” singer checked into a rehabilitation centre specifically meant for people suffering from eating disorders.

The rehabilitation stint changed the way Kesha looked at herself and she has now accepted her body the way it is. She even realized that “food is a positive thing for your body" and “being healthy is the most important thing” for a person.

Today the singer is more comfortable with her skin. She also does not use very heavy makeup as she did in past and has embraced the natural look. Kesha also refrains from reading any negative comments about her appearance on Internet as she wants to focus on positive things in her life.
