Prince Harry's choice of title for his upcoming memoir reflected his personal battle, according to an expert.
Penguin Random House announced the title of Prince Harry's anticipated memoir Thursday. The tell-all "Spare" will chronicle Prince Harry's story with "raw, unflinching honesty," the publisher said.
Shannon Felton Spence, a public affairs expert, moderator, public speaker and TV commentator, weighed in on the title of Prince Harry's book. For her, it showed what Prince Harry had been through all his life.
"It's very nebulous as his mother affectionately called him 'the spare,' but it is also indicative of the battle he has been fighting his whole life, to find a path that is his own in a family and institution set up only for his older brother," she explained to Fox News Digital.
"We knew that this was a memoir, and given the Oprah interview [from March 2021], we expected that there would be some stunning bombshells," Felton Spence added. "The cover, the title – they certainly focus on Harry's internal struggle. That is something very meaningful to him and his advocacy work, but unfortunately, can be a danger for the royal family."
According to Felton Spence, it is not a secret that Prince Harry had "resentment and anger brewing for a very long time." She believed that part of it was a "trauma response" to losing his mom, Princess Diana, and "the way that he always felt like a tack-on as the 'spare.'"
The outlet noted that Buckingham Palace has not responded to the title of the Duke of Sussex's book. However, the expert believes that the royal family would keep a close eye on it.
She added that the contents of Prince Harry's memoir "could be a major reputation risk to them. The institution also focuses on the direct heirs and the senior members of the firm, and in her opinion, "The title alone creates a distraction for anything [the royals] are doing."
International Business Times could not independently verify Felton Spence's claims.
The title of Prince Harry's memoir has a heavy meaning behind it. It was reportedly from the "the heir and the spare" adage, which reflected the Prince of Wales and Duke of Sussex's different destinies since birth. Prince William grew up as the heir to the throne, while his brother was referred to as his spare when they were younger.
Prince Harry's memoir "Spare" will hit shelves on Jan. 10, 2023.
