Toddler Falls To Death From Residential Building's 12th Floor On His Birthday

A 1-year-old child plunged to death from the 12th-floor staircase to the basement of a residential complex Monday afternoon. His parents were reportedly busy preparing for the toddler's birthday celebration when the tragic incident took place.

The child, identified as Baby Riwaan, crawled out of his family's flat located in the Indian city of Noida without anyone noticing, reported The Indian Express. Since it was the toddler's birthday, the family had friends and relatives over and were busy decorating the house. The main door was somehow left ajar as guests were coming in and out of the unit.

"The toddler managed to crawl out of the main door of the house. And as he started to crawl down the stairs, Riwaan's leg got entangled in the grille. As he struggled to detangle himself, the child fell from the space between the grille to the basement," senior police official Yogendra Singh told The Times of India.

Security officials alerted the child's father, Surendra Kasana, after a resident witnessed the boy fall off the staircase.

The child died at the scene due to severe head injuries and blood loss. His family still tried to rush him to a nearby hospital, but he was proclaimed dead on arrival.

The police said they have not registered a case since it was an accidental death. However, legal proceedings are underway, according to an officer.

The toddler's body was later sent for a post-mortem, after which the family took the boy's remains to their hometown for cremation.

The incident has so far sparked a debate on high rises and their safety. A video that shows the building where the accident took place and the stairwell from which Baby Riwaan fell has also been making rounds online.

In March, a video showing a delivery man catching a 2-year-old girl falling from the 12th-floor balcony of a residential building in Vietnam went viral. The driver, identified as Nguyen Ngoc Manh, was sitting in his vehicle to deliver a package when he saw the girl hanging from the balcony. He then ran out of the car and positioned himself underneath the toddler. The girl eventually lost her grip and fell onto the driver's lap.
