Tom Cruise Finally Opens Up About Katie Holmes Divorce: 'I Didn't Expect It'
Tom Cruise has broken his silence and is finally speaking out on his divorce from third wife Katie Holmes. While it might not have been shocking to the rest of the world, the actor says he didn’t see it coming.
Rumors had been swirling for months about Holmes leaving Cruise since she didn’t want their daughter Suri to fall into the world of Scientology, the much-reviled "church" where the actor is a devoted follower and benefactor.
The 50-year-old “Mission Impossible” star has been touring the world to promote his latest flick, “Oblivion,” and opened up about his 2012 split. During a recent interview with German TV network ProSieben, he said he was surprised when his wife filed for divorce on June 29, not even a week before his birthday.
"I didn't expect it," Cruise said about the end of his five-year marriage to the “Dawson’s Creek” star.
He latter added that he "had an unbelievable amount of time to think about it" and then threw himself into his work. What did he take away from the whole experience? "Life is a challenge."
“To be 50 and to have experiences and to think you have a grip on everything, and then it hits you -- this is it, what life can do to you," he told ProSieben. "Life is a tragicomedy. You need to have a sense of humor."
After the apparent shock of his divorce wore off, Cruise seems to have moved on to a happy life, at least that’s what his “Rock of Ages” director Adam Shankman told Us Weekly. The Hollywood director added that Holmes is doing well too.
"They are incredibly happy," Shankman said about the former lovers. "I've just been emailing with [Tom]. He's coming back. He's shooting [his next movie, 'All You Need Is Kill'] in London and seems as happy as a clam. I know he sees his daughter."
Holmes, 33, moved from Hollywood to New York with Suri, now 6, after her divorce. She just finished a stint on the Broadway show “Dead Accounts” and has been working on promoting her fashion line Holmes & Yang, which debuted during New York Fashion Week in September.
