  • Prince William and Kate Middleton attended the "Top Gun: Maverick" premiere in London
  • The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wore matching black and white outfits for the event
  • Tom Cruise said he and the Duke of Cambridge are both aviators and love England and flying

Kate Middleton and Prince William attended the premiere of Tom Cruise's movie "Top Gun: Maverick" in London Thursday.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were all smiles when they arrived and walked the red carpet. Middleton, 40, was stunning in her black-and-white Roland Mouret gown with an off-the-shoulder neckline. Prince William complemented his wife's outfit and looked dapper in his classic tuxedo, Us Weekly reported.

At one point, the lead actor was seen assisting Middleton as they walked up the stairs into the theater. Cruise, 59, spoke with the reporters ahead of the royal couple's arrival and shared what he and Prince William, 39, have in common.

"[Prince William and I] have a lot in common. We both love England, and we’re both aviators, we both love flying," Cruise told the reporters, according to The Daily Mail.

Cruise also expressed his joy in his craft as an actor. He shared his excitement in attending a major premiere in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I love what I do, I’ve always enjoyed it, and I’m enjoying it even more now," the "Mission Impossible" star said. "Particularly after the last couple of years, just to have an event like this is extraordinary."

The premiere also served as a fundraiser for The Film and TV Charity, which supports the people working behind the scenes of TV and film productions in the U.K.

In the sequel, Cruise reprises his role as pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. He first played the role in the blockbuster movie released in 1986.

Earlier this month, he talked about the sequel and how he worked so hard to make it happen.

"This is quite a moment. It's been 36 years [in the making] for this film, the fans have been asking for it all around the world... I kept telling the actors, 'It's coming!'" Cruise told Entertainment Tonight with a laugh. "I kept having to push the film off another year, another year, and I just said, 'Look, we're gonna have a great time when this opens.'"

Some of the original cast members returned to join Cruise in the sequel, including Val Kilmer who reprised his role as Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, a former rival-turned-friend to Cruise's character, Mitchell.

Cruise added that he "rallied hard" to include Kilmer in the first movie because he considered him a "tremendous actor." Kilmer was initially hesitant to co-star with him in "Top Gun."

Almost four decades later and following the massive success of the first movie, Kilmer was on board to join Cruise for the sequel. Their characters even shared one of the most emotional scenes in the film. "You see that scene, and it's very special. It's just very special," Cruise shared wistfully. "He's beautiful."

"Top Gun: Maverick" will hit theaters on May 27.
