Tom Holland Promises ‘Even Cooler’ Spider-Man Movies After Sony-Marvel Separation
Tom Holland is trying to stay positive even as fans are freaking out. Last week, it was confirmed that Sony and Marvel Studios could not come to an agreement to continue working on Spider-Man films together. Thus, Peter Parker is leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Though the character will no longer connect to the Marvel Studios’ movies, Holland will continue to play the web-slinger. The British actor, however, still has ties to Disney, which owns Marvel Studios. He is working with the Mouse House on Pixar’s “Onward,” which he promoted at D23 in Anaheim, California. Of course, he couldn’t avoid questions about the Sony-Marvel Studios separation.
“All I know is that I’m going to continue playing Spider-Man and having the time of my life. It’s going to be so fun, however we choose to do it,” the actor told Entertainment Weekly. “The future for Spider-Man will be different, but it will be equally as awesome and amazing, and we’ll find new ways to make it even cooler.”
Holland also briefly referenced the news while onstage at the convention for Disney fans. “Hey everyone, it’s been a crazy week but I want you all to know, from the bottom of my heart, that I love you 3000,” he said.
Holland’s Spider-Man was introduced in 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War.” He went on to appear in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” all of which were Marvel Studios films. He headlined both “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home” for Sony. The latter is the highest-earning Spider-Man movie ever with over $1.1 billion at the box office.
Fans have grown to love seeing Peter in the MCU, and many have been hoping that the studios will find a way to play nice. Yet it seems that the separation will stick for now. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige told EW, “It was never meant to last forever. We knew there was a finite amount of time that we’d be able to do this.” He also added he was thankful for the time they had together.
Sony previously blamed the deal's disintegration on Disney and their tight leash on Feige. “We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given [Feige] — including all their newly added Marvel properties — do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own,” Sony said in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter. “Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.”
It is not clear when fans can expect another Spider-Man movie.
