A new drama series starring Emmy Award-winning actress Edie Falco starts this week. “Tommy” is the story of Abigail Tommy Thomas, portrayed by Falco, who becomes the first female police chief of Los Angeles.

Falco, who is known for her role in “The Sopranos” as the famous mob wife Carmela Soprano, will be seen as Tommy, a dedicated police officer with a complex personal life.

The actress spoke with USA Today about her character and journey in this new series. When asked about how she would describe the lead she plays, she stated that she is a fine officer.

“She’s a cop to the bone, comes from a cop family. She’s very good at her job, takes it seriously; she’s passionate about it. She has a messy personal life, like many people I know. And she is ultimately a good person,” Falco said.

In the pilot episode of “Tommy,” the lead character is called to Los Angeles after a corruption scandal hit the city. She is brought to change things and revitalize the policing system of the city. Before moving to Los Angeles, Tommy was a city cop in New York. Apart from her professional life, the show also showcases her personal life, including her relationship with her daughter (Olivia Lucy Philip).

Tommy is a lesbian who is confident in uniform, but her vulnerability is reflected when she is off duty.

Talking about the political stand of the show, Falco mentioned that they deal with problems but avoid taking a stand. “We deal with issues, but we don’t take political sides … As soon as you identify yourself as having a particular point of view right now in this country, you’re losing half of the audience,” the actress said.
