Tony Bennett Reacts To Lady Gaga's Historic Oscar Nomination: 'Proud Of You'
Tony Bennett has sent his friend Lady Gaga a special congratulatory message after the latter's historic Academy Awards nomination.
"Congratulations to the amazingly talented @ladygaga on her 4th Oscar nomination! Today, Lady Gaga makes history as the first artist to receive three nominations in the 'Best Original Song' category at the #Oscars. So proud of you!" the 96-year-old singer wrote in a tweet.
Gaga earned the said nomination for the song "Hold My Hand," which she co-wrote with Bloodpop and is included in the soundtrack of "Top Gun: Maverick." She was nominated in the same category in 2015 and 2019 for "Til It Happens to You" from the documentary film "The Hunting Ground" and "Shallow" from the hit movie "A Star Is Born," respectively.
Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, and Bloodpop are going up against Diane Warren, who was nominated for the song "Applause" from the film "Tell It Like a Woman," and Rihanna, Ryan Coogler and Ludwig Goransson for "Lift Me Up" from the Marvel movie "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever."
Gaga and Bloodpop are also facing off with M.M. Keeravaani and Chandrabose, who got a nomination for their song "Naatu Naatu" from the movie "RRR," and Ryan Lott, David Byrne, Mitski, Ryan Lott and David Byrne for the track "This is a Life" from "Everything Everywhere All at Once."
In April 2022, Gaga gave an emotional tribute to Bennett during the 64th Grammy Awards. Bennett appeared in a pre-taped video and introduced Gaga to the audience before her performance at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Gaga passionately performed "Do I Love You" and "Love for Sale," which are both duet tracks with Bennett, in front of the crowd. At the end of her performance, she tearfully said, "I love you, Tony. We miss you."
The songs are part of the album "Love for Sale," which became the legendary crooner's 15th No. 1 on Billboard's traditional jazz albums chart.
Bennett had his final performance with Gaga at Radio City Music Hall in New York City in August 2021. In 2016, Bennett revealed he has been battling Alzheimer's disease.
