KEY POINTS

  • The Tomb Kings rely on swarm tactics and powerful units to dominate the battlefield
  • Tomb King infantry units have bad stats but are great at holding lines
  • Construct units are mandatory for winning big battles

The Tomb Kings are one of the weirder and more difficult factions to play in “Total War: Warhammer 2.” They have a reputation for being extremely weak and powerful at the same time thanks to their unique roster of unit types, which almost always leads to confusion among newer players.

Unlike other factions with standard armies, the Tomb Kings rely more on their special units to dominate the battlefield, requiring more tactical knowledge and finesse from any commander. Here’s a quick overview of how to play the faction and a few tips on how to find more success with them.

Tomb Kings Playstyle

Much like the Skaven, the basic infantry units of the Tomb Kings are laughably weak due to poor base stats. This makes early campaign battles somewhat difficult, especially against Orks and the armored cavalry units of Bretonnia. Despite this, the basic skeleton infantry units are still good for holding frontlines and blocking cavalry charges.

The main strength of the Tomb King armies lies in their Construct units, from the intimidating Ushabti to the devastating Tomb Scorpion and the towering Hierotitan. These units are extremely powerful, often capable of taking down entire units of infantry by themselves.

Battle Tips And Army Compositions

Having a solid line of Skeleton Swordsmen and Spearmen is essential to any effective Tomb King army. About 8-10 units of basic infantry mixed with a few Tomb Guard units can make for an excellent defensive line that can hold against most other factions while archers, artillery and constructs deal the brunt of the army’s damage.

In most cases, constructs are used to flank the frontline to cause Terror and major damage against enemy units. Large constructs like Scorpions, Warsphinxes and Necrosphinxes thrive best in the thick of combat.

War Chariots can be devastating against infantry, but make sure to cycle charge them to maximize effectiveness. The standard War Chariot can be replaced with their ranged versions once they become available.

Campaign Tips

  • Maximize Canopic Jar production via buildings and Lord/Hero traits
  • Have armies travel in pairs; one filled with elite units and the other filled with basic skeletons
  • The Black Pyramid of Nagash can be easily conquered with 2-3 elite siege armies
  • Recruit more Necrotects to increase the number of fieldable constructs
  • Invest in anti-cavalry units when expanding to the west and anti-infantry to the east

Lastly, don’t be afraid to play slowly and defensively. Most Tomb King campaign objectives involve building their strongest units, so feel free to take things slowly, especially during the first playthrough.
