KEY POINTS

  • Man Utd blew the signing of Erling Haaland
  • Haaland chose to join Dortmund instead
  • Here is a list of 5 players Man Utd could be chasing in January

With the New Year kick-started, the whole focus in soccer has shifted to the January transfer window and Manchester United, like the other Premier League clubs, will get busy in shortlisting their targets.

The previous transfer window saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer change the approach in Man Utd’s signings. They roped in youngsters like Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka and by doing so, the Norwegian boss has made his intentions clear in regards to trading for promising upcoming players and groom them for the future.

Ever since then, a range of young players have been linked with a move to the Theatre of Dreams.

Last month when Solskjaer was asked about the January transfer window, the manager had said that although they have depth in their squad, they have suffered because of several injuries over the season. Hence, Man Utd will look to make a few signings to close the gap when injuries take place.

“We keep on going in the direction we're going. We know that we need to strengthen the squad in-depth and in quality. We've signed three good ones, for sure. We've got some young ones through but still the depth of the squad, especially when you think about all the injuries we've had, we haven't been able to have that consistency. But when we get those [new] players in I'm sure that gap is going to be closed."

"Do I look like I'm going to spend hundreds of millions of pounds on players we're not sure of? As I said, we need to rebuild, we need to change the culture. You want the culture with that hunger and selflessness that most of these players are showing. You've got the [Scott] McTominays and [Marcus] Rashfords and [Jesse] Lingards, the players that know what Manchester United is,” Solskjaer added in an interview before Man Utd faced off Manchester City in the Premier League in December.

Before the transfer season, Man Utd were targeting Redbull Salzburg’s Erling Haaland, who eventually chose to join Dortmund. Following this blow, Man Utd are keen to have a great transfer window in January and here are the five players they could be chasing this month:

Jack Grealish

The Ashton Villa skipper, with five goals and five assists in 18 appearances this season, has made a decent case for himself ahead of the transfer window. While he has quite a few clubs after him in the Premier League, his primary goal possibly will be breaking into England’s squad for the Euro 2020.

Jadon Sancho

Former Manchester City winger, Sancho is one of the promising players in England and has been linked to an England return for a while now. Since Dortmund rate the teenager quite highly, they are ensuring they gain more than $130m as transfer fee from any club wanting his services. Apart from Man Utd, Premier League clubs such as Liverpool FC and Chelsea reportedly are also interested in the striker.

Jude Bellingham

At just 16 years, the player has broken into the senior team of Birmingham City, a club that plays in the second-tier competition of English soccer. According to news reports, Man Utd assistant Mike Phelan has been keeping a close eye on the midfielder.

Christian Eriksen

Man Utd tried to sign Eriksen last summer but failed to do so. The former Premier League champions are expected to make another move this month as the midfielder is in the final months of his contract with Tottenham Hotspur.

Solskjaer and Co will not have an easy way out in Eriksen’s signing as the player is expected to receive bids from clubs like Inter Milan and Juventus too.

Boubakary Soumare

An emerging talent in the French League, Soumare is believed to be a target for quite a few Premier League clubs. The former youth product at Paris Saint-Germain has been linked with the likes of Tottenham and Man Utd, with a possible transfer fee of price-tag of around $67m.
