True Crime Podcast Examines JonBenét Ramsey Suspect's 'Curious' Behavior Following 1996 Crime
Since JonBenét Ramsey's 1996 murder, suspicion has continued to follow certain individuals close to the one-time child beauty queen due to the fact that the case remains unsolved. In episode 4 of "The Killing of JonBenét: The Final Suspects," the new true crime podcast took a closer look at Ramsey's former photographer, Randy Simons, and his behavior at the time of her death.
At the top of the episode, former sheriff’s investigator John San Agustin stated that law enforcement continually focused on JonBenét's parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, and her brother, Burke. However, since a formal conclusion has never been drawn, Agustin stated that that viewpoint has been "exhausted" and he believes the investigation should be taking a serious look at others close to the case.
Author Stephen Singular then discussed Simons and his alleged behavior following the 1996 Boulder, Colorado, murder.
"All of the beauty pageant mothers that we spoke with said exactly the same thing to us — that since the murder, Randy had been calling them up in the middle of the night, after midnight, hysterical screaming and crying, saying, 'I did not kill JonBenét, I did not kill JonBenét,'" he stated, as reported by Us Weekly.
However, according to Singular, he was not seen as a suspect up to that point. Therefore, his behavior left other pageant moms "totally mystified."
"They just sort of began telling us the same story, which we found very curious," Singular later added.
Simons was eventually excluded due to his DNA not matching what was found at the crime scene, but, according to the law enforcement official, that doesn't completely prove his innocence in his mind.
"Just because Randy Simons’ DNA does not match, we don’t know who Randy Simons was associated with and hanging out with in the timeframe of … December 25, 26 of 96," Agustin said on the podcast, adding, "If we can show that he’s in that area and we can show that he had an affiliation or somebody that he was aligned with that ends up matching the DNA … he would still be charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder."
Simons was later arrested in October 1998 for indecent exposure and then again in July 2019 for downloading child pornography. He is currently serving his prison sentence in Oregon.
