  • The House Speaker is the third in line for presidential succession
  • The Speaker does not need to be an elected member of Congress
  • Rep. Matt Gaetz recently "promised" supporters that he would nominate Trump as Speaker in 2022

Several aides working for former President Donald Trump “laughed off the idea that he’ll run for House Speaker in 2022 and replace current Speaker Nancy Pelosi,” a new book revealed.

In a forthcoming book titled “Landslide; The Final Days of the Trump Presidency” by American journalist Michael Wolff, Trump’s aides allegedly dismissed the rumors saying it was a "real job" that required "actual work."

"For Trump aides, though, this was risible. Speaker of the House is a 'real job,' and Trump, in no way, is going to actually work," Wolff wrote, according to an excerpt obtained by the Times of London on Monday.

The rumors about Trump’s possible bid for House Speaker began in June after conspiracy theorist Wayne Allen Root suggested the idea to the former president during an interview.

"You become the Speaker of the House, lead the impeachment of Biden and start criminal investigations against Biden. You'll wipe him out for this last two years," Root said, to which Trump replied: “So interesting.”

The Speaker of the House is third in line for presidential succession, following behind the U.S. president and vice president.

Under the U.S. Constitution, the nominee for House Speaker does not need to be an elected member of Congress. However, every speaker elected so far has been an incumbent member of the House of Representatives.

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., on Saturday promised a crowd of Trump supporters during a Florida rally that he plans to nominate the former president for the Speaker role.

"After the next election cycle when we take back the House of Representatives, when we send [current Speaker] Nancy Pelosi back to the filth of San Francisco, my commitment to you is that my vote for Speaker of the US House of Representatives will go to Donald J. Trump," Gaetz said, according to the Business Insider.

In February, former White House strategist Steve Bannon also suggested electing Trump to Congress and displacing Pelosi before launching impeachment proceedings against President Joe Biden.

“Going forward, we can transform the Republican Party into more of a MAGA movement … just immerse the (Make America Great Again) movement with the Republican Party, and we’re going to have massive victories in the future,” Bannon added during a Lincoln Day Breakfast speech, according to the Boston Herald.
