Former President Donald Trump has claimed he is one of the most honest human beings ever created.
Speaking at a rally in North Carolina on Saturday, Trump shared a story in which an unnamed acquaintance praised his administration for being “clean,” noting that investigations into the former president “found nothing.”
"I've been investigated by the Democrats more than Billy the Kid, Jessie James, and Al Capone combined. And in all cases I’ve been innocent," Trump told a crowd of supporters. "I've got to be the cleanest sheriff. I think I'm the most honest human being, perhaps, that God ever created."
Trump is the only president in the history of the United States to be impeached twice. He was impeached for the first time in December 2019 over “abuse of power” and “obstruction of Congress” after he pressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky into launching an investigation into President Joe Biden.
The former president was impeached for a second time on Jan. 13, 2021, over charges of inciting an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 that led to the death of five people. The impeachment article also cited a call that Trump had with Georgia’s Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. During the call, Trump urged the Georgia election official to “find votes” to overturn the state’s election results.
In both cases, House Democrats voted in favor of Trump’s impeachment. However, he was later acquitted by the Senate.
In addition to being impeached twice, Trump was found to have made more than 30,000 misleading claims during his term as the U.S. president. On average, the former president told 21 lies per day, according to The Washington Post’s Fact Checker database.
During his presidency, Trump also promoted several conspiracy theories, including rumors suggesting that former President Barack Obama was not born in the country. Obama later released his long-form birth certificate. Trump then questioned the authenticity of the document.
Following the results of the 2020 election, Trump also repeatedly claimed that there was widespread voter fraud during the election. However, U.S. intelligence and several law enforcement officials dismissed his claim and concluded that there was no voter fraud.
