The Truth About Why Mary Kay Letourneau And Vili Fualaau Are Living Apart

As Mary Kay Letourneau and her husband, Vili Fualaau, begin the process of legally separating, the couple has begun to move on with their lives after 14 years of marriage.

The couple is no longer living together as their marriage began to deteriorate years earlier, a source close to Letourneau told People. Letourneau, 57, and Fualaau, 35, got married in 2005 and had two children together before he was 15-years-old.

Letourneau was Fualaau’s sixth-grade teacher that began a sexual relationship with the then 12-year-old. She served seven years in prison for child rape and is a registered sex offender in the state of Washington.

“It’s easy to think that the marriage was doomed based on how they met, but the reasons behind the breakup of their marriage were actually pretty common,” the news outlet source said. “They just couldn’t get on the same page anymore. They’re too different.”

The couple is no longer sharing the same home after Fualaau filed for legal separation in 2017 in Washington's King County Superior Court, despite trying to reconcile their differences. They have since moved toward the process of legally separating with private arbitration, which is slated to occur by Aug. 1.

“It’s completely over,” the source told People. “They’re not living together, they’re speaking cordially when they have to, but there’s nothing left anymore. Frankly, it’s long overdue at this point; neither of them were happy.”

With an age difference of 22 years, Letourneau and Fualaau struggled to make their marriage work with money problems reportedly as one of the reasons for their split. The couple also slept in separate rooms before filing for separation, which the People source said was because “the intimacy was gone.

“That’s not to say they didn’t love each other, but it wasn’t what it used to be,” the source said.
