A Tulsa woman ended up behind bars for allegedly trying to kidnap a five-year-old child from a swimming pool. The abduction bid was foiled, thanks to the timely intervention of the child's father.
Police said Jordan Canfield was arrested Saturday in connection with the kidnapping incident reported at the apartment complex pool near 61st and Peoria, reported 2 News Oklahoma.
According to the arrest report, the child at the swimming pool when Canfield called him over. She told him his time to swim was up, and she would take him home. She then took his hand and walked off.
A few minutes later, the child's father realized the boy was missing. After searching the pool area, he drove around looking for him. That's when he spotted the pair five blocks away. Canfield was walking down the street holding the boy's hand.
The panicked father yelled his son’s name. The child, on seeing his dad, ran up to him as the woman fled on foot. Police officials located Canfield several blocks away and took her into custody.
According to the father, he never met Canfield before. She was a stranger to the child as well. The boy wasn’t injured during the abduction.
The woman will face one count of kidnapping/child stealing in addition to obstructing justice. Police also charged her with possession of marijuana without a license. Canfield will also undergo evaluation for mental health issues, officers said.
Police added that she appears to be homeless as they were unable to find anything about her residence.
In a similar incident, a bodycam video of an abduction attempt being foiled by Kentucky police had gone viral last week. The footage showed a police officer rescuing a six-year-old girl, who had been grabbed from her bike and put in a vehicle by a 40-year-old man identified as Robby Wildt.
In the footage, officer Jason Burba is shown approaching a red sedan driven by Wildt, who was taken to custody. The officer opens the passenger door of the car and finds the girl inside. While the officers reassure the child and pick her up, she is heard saying, "I want my daddy." Reports added that the child was unharmed.
